Locksmith in Hamilton, OntarioAccess controlfor real buildings.

Fobs, keypads and card readers are only worthwhile when the doors, closers and wiring behind them are sound. We design small access systems for offices, clinics and multi-unit buildings, install them cleanly, and hand over a system your staff can actually manage.

From the shop

One key, every door, no fuss.

Most calls start with a question rather than a decision: is this lock worth saving, should the whole house be rekeyed, does a smart lock make sense on an older door. We would rather answer that properly than sell you a part. We look at the hardware, the door and how you use it, then lay out the choices and their trade-offs in plain words.

  • Choices, not a single answerMost problems have more than one fix. We lay out the practical options and the trade-offs, then let you choose the one that fits your home and budget.

Ways we can help you

We would rather you knew what a service involves before you book it. That is why every page below walks through the checks, the work and what you are left with afterwards, in plain language, with no assumption that you already know the names of the parts.

Lockouts

Lockout Services

If you are locked out of a car, tell us the make and roughly the year, whether a child or pet is inside, and where it is parked. That is enough to bring the right tools and to open the vehicle without harming the door or paint.

Change or rekey

Change or Rekey Locks

Smart locks are a good fit for some households and an irritation for others. We install them, connect them, and are honest about where a keypad or phone makes life easier and where a solid mechanical deadbolt is the better answer.

  1. A silver-colored deadbolt set in clear packaging with two keys resting on the countertop in front. — Lock Rekeying, Hamilton
Lock RekeyingThe previous owners left a coffee tin of keys on the counter, some labelled, most not. The house is yours now, but you have no idea how many copies were cut over the years or who still has one in a drawer somewhere.
  2. Person holding a silver-colored lock beside an open wooden door with exposed circular holes and a latch at its edge. — Deadbolt Installation, Hamilton
Deadbolt InstallationThe back door has a deadbolt in name only: a short bolt, a thin brass strike held by two little screws, and a jamb you can flex with your palm. It was fine for a builder's showing.
  3. Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, Hamilton
Lock Replacement & UpgradeThe keys the seller handed over came in a sandwich bag: six unlabelled copies for two locks of different makes from different decades. You have no idea how many more copies exist or who is holding them.
  4. Person holding a long door handle and rectangular lock case beside an open wooden door with exposed hardware recesses. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, Hamilton
Vintage Mortise Lock ServiceYou bought a house with its original hardware and a bag of loose keys. Some open interior doors, some fit nothing, and the front door lock has a keyhole shaped for a key you do not have.
  5. Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, Hamilton
Smart Lock InstallationThe deadbolt is a stiff double-cylinder model that needs a key from both sides, and in the dark hallway finding it is a nuisance. You want a thumb-turn inside, a keypad outside, and a door that locks itself behind you.
  6. Pale blue garden gate with a black lever latch between light stone pillars. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Hamilton
Gate & Building Entry LocksThe driveway gate drags a groove into the gravel every time it swings, and the latch stopped catching weeks ago. Now it sits propped shut with a brick, waiting for anyone to walk through and forget to prop it back.
  7. Detached threaded cam lock and mounting washer on a workbench in front of closed mail compartments. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, Hamilton
Mailbox Lock ReplacementThe mail slot on the shop's exterior wall has a small compartment lock that a former employee still has a key to, months after they left. Nobody on staff can say with any confidence who else might hold a copy.

Commercial

Commercial Locks

Services here appear in the order a business tends to need them: a lockout or a lost key first, then rekeying, then a master system, then exit hardware and access control as the premises grow and the staff list lengthens.

Calls like these

Person in an apron holding a car key fob beside a key-cutting machine, with rows of key blanks on the wall.

Lock Replacement & Upgrade

The lever on the side door droops toward the floor and rattles in your hand. The latch no longer springs back on its own, so the door drifts open behind you unless you pull it shut and check it twice.

Which fix fits?

Your front door has only the lock in the knob, nothing else. The usual fix

UsuallyAdd a proper deadbolt above it.

WhyA bolt into a reinforced strike is what actually holds a door; the knob just keeps it closed.

The deadbolt wobbles and the screws spin in the door. The usual fix

UsuallyRe-fit the hardware and repair the bore.

WhyStripped holes can be plugged and redrilled, so the same lock sits tight again.

You are tired of carrying keys and want a code instead. The usual fix

UsuallyA keypad deadbolt with a key override.

WhyEach family member gets a code, guests get a temporary one, and a mechanical key remains for the day the batteries die.

Every time the courtyard gate closes, it slams hard enough to rattle the fence panels, and the deadlatch never quite drops into the keeper before the spring…The usual fix

UsuallyGate & Building Entry Locks

WhySome building entries add a buzzer, a keypad or an electric strike to the mechanical lock, and any one of those pieces can be the reason a door stops releasing on cue.

You've just moved in, and the mailbox compartment in the lobby came with a single key the previous owner mailed back separately, or never handed over at all.The usual fix

UsuallyMailbox Lock Replacement

WhySmall outdoor cam locks take a beating over a Canadian winter: road spray, salt, and repeated freezing leave the keyway gritty and the cylinder stiff long before the metal actually fails.

A safe sat in a late parent's basement for years, its combination known to nobody left in the family, and everyone would like to know what is actually inside…The usual fix

UsuallySafe Opening & Combination Change

WhyTwo different problems can look identical from outside a locked safe: a combination that genuinely no longer opens it, and a mechanism that is jammed, corroded or blocked while the correct numbers still work perfectly.

How a visit goes

How much a lost key matters depends on what was lost with it. A ring that dropped into a lake on a canoe trip tells nobody where it fits, so the rekey is a tidy precaution.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    Mapping who needs what

We sit down with whoever manages the building and list the doors, the people and the hours. A stockroom key and a front door key are rarely the same conversation.

  2. 2 of 3

    Changing the locks in order

We rekey door by door in an order that keeps the business open, starting with the entrance a departed key holder used most, and label everything as we go.

  3. 3 of 3

    Handing over a key record

You get the new keys, a simple written list of which key opens what, and a suggestion for where to store the record so the next change is easier.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 61%Older homes

About 61% of homes in Hamilton were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Older doors are usually thicker and made of solid wood, which is good news. They take a deadbolt well, hold longer strike screws, and reward reinforcement. The locksmith measures the thickness and backset so new hardware fits without fresh holes.

  • 56%

Single-detached houses make up about 56% of homes in Hamilton (2021 Census).

In areas of mixed housing, landlords may own a house here and a few units there. A locksmith can put all of it under one master system so the owner carries one key while each tenant's key opens only their own door.

My key fell in the snow in my own yard. Do I still need to rekey?

It is your call, and it is a reasonable one either way. A key lost on your own property is unlikely to be picked up by a stranger, but it will surface in the spring thaw, and until then you are trusting a guess about where it lies. Many households rekey anyway for the certainty, and because the visit also lets them put every door on one key while the locksmith is there.

A garage door remote was on the ring. What happens with that?

The opener on the garage ceiling holds a memory of every remote paired to it, and it can be erased in one step so the lost remote is forgotten. The remotes still in the household are paired again afterwards, and a keypad on the outside of the garage gets a new code if you have one. The locksmith can do this during the visit, and it takes only a few minutes at the opener.

Does stamping keys 'do not duplicate' stop copies?

It asks; it does not compel. The stamp is a request that a key-cutting counter may or may not honour, and manufacturers say as much. Real control comes from a restricted keyway, whose blanks are issued only through authorised channels against a key card, or simply from knowing how many keys exist and who holds them. A rekey resets that count to a number you chose.

Can all my doors be on one key?

Yes, and most homes ask for exactly that. Every exterior cylinder is pinned to the same combination so one controlled key opens the front, back, side and garage entry. A gate or shed padlock on the same keyway can join it. For businesses, the same keyway can carry a small master system where staff keys open only their areas and a manager key opens everything. The keying plan is agreed before any pinning is done.
